Summer Afternoon

I've always loved this quote by Henry James:  "Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language."

I love the laid back feeling of summer afternoons. Time to relax on the porch with a library book and some hand stitching. A glass of iced coffee within easy reach. The sound of cicadas. Waiting for just the slightest breeze.

I am enjoying "Summer Rental". It really is the perfect summer read. I also have discovered that I love doing hand work. I have been hand stitching this project all week and I love it. It's not ready for it's ta-dah moment, but I thought I would share a little of what I have been working on.

I hope that you all are enjoying a few summer afternoons of your own!

  1. A beautiful atmospheric summery post, Debbie! When I first saw your post title I thought of that lovely quote too. Love the sweet fabrics you have there and the book matches in so well. I love hand sewing too, there is something very peaceful and mindful about it. Enjoy your summer afternoon!

I too have enjoyed a bit of reading and hand sewing outside earlier this week - it is so peaceful and restful.

  5. Spent an hour in the porch swing today myself! But now you've made me realize I was missing an iced coffee! Next time.
Thanks for the heads up on the good summer read. I'm almost done with my current book, and will need another soon.
And....your sewing project looks so fresh and pretty and summery. I'm admiring your pretty stitches, as I most definitely do not posess any pretty stitch skills myself.
Thanks for the peek into your perfect summer afternoon!

  7. Dear Debbie! Lucky me you came to visit my place so I could find yours. This really is a happy little cottage! Love browsing around here. Curious, what thread do you use when you hand quilt? I would like to give this technique a go... Love the above work and how you use whites to brighten up the fun patterns even more. Really interesting. Can't wait to see the finished quilt.
    Ciao for now!
