To Wash or Not To Wash?

That is the question. What is your take on quilts?

Do you like them all ironed and pristine?

Or do you like the washed, crinkly look?

If you were buying a quilt, which would you prefer?  I am wondering whether to keep using warm and natural cotton batting, or if I should switch to a poly batting. I usually photograph my quilts and send them unwashed, but I am wondering if my customers are expecting them to stay smooth even though I mention in my item description that they will crinkle and pucker with the first wash.  Any thoughts would be so helpful!

Thanks!!

  1. I started quilting back when it was necessary to prewash all your fabrics to prevent the dye from running. My quilts from that era aren't super crinkly. I've yet to finish (ahem) a quilt with non-pre washed fabrics but am eager to do so, in part for the crinkle factor! But, I think it comes down to whether or not the recipient wants to hang the quilt up on the wall as a piece d'art, or for it to be snuggled under and used. For the latter--I think crinkle is necessary. Just my $.02!

  2. You can't go wrong if you send them unwashed, but with instructions that to get the crinkly, cuddliness of a handmade quilt all they have to do is throw it in the washer!

  3. This is a great question. All the quilts I have made as gifts have been given one wash so that they will be soft and crinkly. One even came out of the drier and was qucikly wrapped for a bday gift. It was still warm when she opened it and she loved it. :0) I have tried poly batting but prefer the cotton. It washes over and over staying warm and not lumping up. What do you prefer? Do you like your quilts wrinkly or ironed? :0) hugs to you. Trish

  4. I always used Warm and Natural and love the crinkly look. If I made a wall hanging, however, I usually went for the smoother look.

  5. Love them crinkly. I always wash. Quilts are to be used aren't they? Unless they are for wall decoration. I would wash. ANd take beautiful crinkly quilt pictures that makes everybode want to cuddly up that crinkle cuddly thingy. Good luck. :D

  6. I love them either way...but probably crinkled if they are to be snuggled under! You could always ask your customers which they'd prefer and then you'd know for sure!
    Have a lovely day, Debbie!

  8. Nothing beats a crisp fresh quilt, but I have to confess to loving the washed crinkled look - it gives it a kind of age......for me.

  9. I say go with the crinkly and stay with the cotton batting. Poly beards out and it doesn't make the quilt look as nice as the cotton. :)

  10. My first few I did not wash. But quickly realized I like the look of the washed better. That and it hides those little mistakes that only I would notice.

  11. My quilts are made to be used, so they always end up looking crinkly and washed. I even wash wall hangings.

  12. Washed and crinkle-y with the fresh smell of fabric softener...Puckers and bumps...The best way to enjoy a quilt. The quilt is lovely.
    Blessings to you.

  13. I personally love a crinkly quilt fresh from the dryer. It will be up next to my check every single time. :)
Heck, now when I look in the mirror....I look more crinkly myself. Maybe that is why I like that look. Hee hee. :)
    Have a lovely evening.
    Hugs!

  15. When in doubt, ask! You could ask your previous customers if they were happy and give the option to new customers! :)

  16. I am a washed girl, myself...that way it is all ready for the new owner and will not scare them if it gets messy!! especially a baby quilt...I wash and dry in the dryer and tell the new mom it is ready for use...even if I hand quilt and hand embroider!!!!!!

  18. I recently purchased a sweet little pin cushion from your etsy shop, and just realized that (of course) you have a blog! And it's a lovely blog, too! The pin cushion was so darling that I ordered another one this evening for my mother. I don't quilt, but she does, as well as other family members. We say "Wash 'em! Quilts are meant to be used and enjoyed!"

  19. Yes I love crinkly quilts too ... but I think unwashed is fine to send at first aslong as the buyer understands that they will go crinkly when washed.

Whether crinckly or uncrinkly your quilts are beautiful.

  20. Your quilt is so beautiful that I'm sure anyone would be delighted with either, however, personally I like the crinkly look for a quilt, somehow it feels more comfortable and snuggly!
