Weekender Bag Planning Progress

So in my usual fashion I have changed my mind about how I want to make my Weekender Bag. My overflowing bins of Bonnie and Camille mini charms may have played a small part in that decision. That, and seeing the really cute patchwork bag by Porch Swing Quilts. The minute I saw it I knew that's what I wanted to make. If you follow the link you'll not only see the bag, but you'll get lots of tips and tricks for your bag.

I made a small pocket panel earlier in the week as an experiment, and though I love cathedral windows, I love little squares even more. According to Jennie,  a total of 274 squares is needed! I am going to make my pockets with batting and lining only, no canvas. The bulk when sewing all these layers together is really scary, and the batting should give plenty of structure to the pocket.

I'm still deciding what fabrics to use for the top and bottom, and for the straps. I am leaning towards the cream quirky from the Little Ruby for the top to give the eye a rest from all the color, and either red polka dot or gingham for the straps. I need to place my order so I'll be ready to make my panels!!

How is your planning coming along??

  2. I have narrowed down a color scheme and fabric line. It is the execution of a design for the pockets that is troublesome and will take some time. I love the idea of the small squares though and it is a good fall back for someone with more limited sewing time. So excited to see this unfold! Thank you for your efforts!

  3. My bag will be patchwork as well. I'm going to lay out my squares this weekend and I'm thinking of using Soft and Stable though I have purchased duck canvas to use.

  4. Thanks so much for that link. I love that bag and think I may be able to handle going that route! do you think it may be ok to do fusible fleece and lining and skip the canvas? Would the fusible fleece be similar to the batting? I will admit that this bag does scare me!,

  5. Sorry for the second comment. I was just reading about using Soft and Stable which I do have. Would that mean one would use the soft and stable and the lining and that would be enough?..

    1. Ditto on the soft and stable question! I like the firmness of it and it is SO much softer than peltex!! I'd rather use it if it will work as well...if not better. ;) How would we adapt? :)

    3. Lisa and Kristen, I think the soft and stable is fine in place of batting, and is fine on it's own for the pocket panels, but I think the bag panels would still need either cotton duck or peltex for the structure. Chrissy at Sew Lux will be posting more about this in upcoming posts. :)

  6. One more thing...sorry. But are the bag panels the biggest outside pieces?
