Week One - Weekender Bag Sew Along

It's time to start our Weekender Bag Sew Along!!  Chrissy from Sew Lux and I are thrilled that so many of you are sewing along with us. A few of you have made the bag before, but lots of you, like me, are making one for the very first time.

We know this bag can be a little intimidating, so we're splitting up the process over several weeks and sharing how we are making all the parts and any modifications that we incorporate as we sew this bag together. With a little patience and some denim needles you can totally do it too!

Here's our schedule of events:

Mon. June 6 - Planning - Fabrics & Materials
Mon. June 20 - Cutting, Interfacing, Making the Panels
Wed. July 6- Sewing the Outer Bag Together
Mon. July 11  - Finishing the Bag & Link Up
Mon. July 25 - Prizes!!!

As you can see, we are taking our time with this bag. I know lots of us are super busy during the summer with kids at home, vacations to plan and lots of pool time!! This week we are planning and gathering our fabrics and materials, if you haven't already. Here is the link to Chrissy's original post that will help you along the way.

I am planning on making my bag with patchwork panels using lots and lots of Bonnie and Camille scraps and cute mini blocks on the side pockets, and following Chrissy's lead, will be using quilting cotton, batting and cotton duck instead of the peltex that is called for in the pattern.

Leave a comment with any questions, and let us know how you plan to make your bag! We would love to see your progress. Please post on Instagram using @wbsa2016 so we can all see!!
Happy Planning!!!

  1. Hurray! I'm really excited to start this bag! I have a Little Ruby layer cake that I've set aside to use for all of my pockets. I have not yet decided on what I want for the main panels, so I may wait to purchase that until after my pockets are done.
My local quilt shop, Rachel's Quilt Patch, offers microseal! If anyone is interested, I've talked to them about sealing my bag for me. They have suggested that I send the pieces in just before I sew them all together.
Microseal is a natural fabric protection that water proofs, stain proof and fade resistant that seals all fabrics. I've had several quilts treated and you can't tell that it was even added.
I just wanted to share this tip since Rachel's is the only quilt store in the world offering this service!! I'm happy to send along more info if anybody is interested :)
Thank you so much for hosting!! Excited to begin!!

    1. Hi Kristen,
You can find the pattern in Chrissy's shop. There should be a link up there somewhere or in a previous post :)

  6. Thanks for hosting this! I'm actually going on a summer trip the last week of June, so I'm going to be on an accelerated schedule in order to finish up my bag for the vacay ;-) I'm doing patchwork pockets, but am still debating my main fabric. I also compiled a list of tips & tricks from other creative bloggers and posted it on my blog, in case anyone wants to have a look: http://intricatesimplicitydesigns.blogspot.com/2016/06/weekender-bag-sew-along-2016.html Thanks again...it's so nice to know there are others brave enough to tackle this bag along with me!
